Frequently Asked Questions (Studio)
This FAQ is about the studio and its features. For frequently asked questions about renting HOIST, please see the Rental FAQ.
- Is there any natural light at HOIST?
- Do you have cameras or lighting equipment available?
- Can I record sound at HOIST?
1. Is there any natural light at HOIST?
HOIST is intended for use with artificial light sources, but shooting under natural light is not impossible. We do have a 12-ft wide by 14-ft high southern-facing roll-up door which can, weather permitting, be opened to provide ample natural lighting into certain parts of the studio. If you plan to shoot at HOIST using natural light, please contact us to discuss your project.
2. Do you have cameras or lighting equipment available?
Because our users' needs are particular and diverse, we do not provide cameras, lighting, or specialized light modifiers. We do, however, provide much of the essential equipment used around the studio as shown on the equipment page. For cameras, lighting, and other similar equipment, some rental providers are listed in the resources section. We have relationships with some of these vendors, and may be able to provide you with discounted rates on equipment rentals and even arrange to have your rental equipment waiting for you at HOIST when you arrive at no extra cost. Please contact us for more information.
3. Can I record sound at HOIST?
Yes you can, but HOIST is not a sound stage. We are in a relatively peaceful location, but some noise does bleed through the walls from outside and our roof gets loud during heavy rain. If you want to record sound at HOIST, please know that good quality sound can be (and has been) recorded successfully with proper care, equipment, and expertise… but we cannot guarantee silence. Ask us about your specific needs for more info.
